15 Apr The Great Three Days!
Welcome to Holy Week!
In an earlier time, the Church referred to the Worship experiences of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter as “The Great Three Days.” They were seen as a unified whole, each essential in the context of the others in telling the good news of the suffering, crucifixion, death, burial, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, as portrayed in the Gospels. Those of us who’ve lived mostly in the 20th & 21st Centuries, have usually treated them as separate individual worship services each with its own focus. Many churches omit one or more of them, or compress Palm Sunday’s triumphal entry to Jerusalem & Easter’s glorious joy & victory into a single celebratory experience…or as a victory to victory series of “highs.”
I think our earlier ancestors in Christ had it right. The Great Three Days are more like a single extended, worship service. You need all three to fully be grasped by what God has done & is doing through the life, death, resurrection & reign of His Son Jesus the Christ. While we already know the rest of the story, the resurrection, Christ’s journey to glory is marked by significant moments along the way and it’s those moments that create space in our lives for the Spirit to transform how we see similar moments of our own lives. You really don’t want to miss worship…ever. But you especially want to be among the family of Christ at every opportunity this week.
The Great Three Days of Worship! Invite someone you know…they could be thanking you for it eternally.
